A brief history of our congregation in Sydenham
The German Church Sydenham was founded in 1876 by German Business- and Tradesmen, who wanted to move from the City of London to the quiet and leafy suburb of Forest Hill. The famous Theologist Dietrich Bonhoeffer was the minister of the German congregation between 1933 and 1935. Our congregations feels it a special responsibility to remember and cherish his spiritual and ethical legacy to this day.
The former Bonhoeffer Church was destroyed by German bombs during the Second World War. In 1959 a new church was erected in the same place and named after Dietrich Bonhoeffer - now a central part in the life of our community.
